ice cream in a can

Today, I did a lot of rolling. Of a coffee can, that is. It was all part of helping my friend Jim test a science experiment he wants to teach some kids with downs syndrome tomorrow. Jim's gonna kill me for not remembering, but it had something to do with how putting salt on the ice actually makes the temperature drop about 40 degrees for half an hour. So much for being a good student...lol.

The best part was that we got to eat the results...and they were good! Here are some pics from Jim's day teaching the kids:

The ingredients and instructions were similar to the one below that I found online, but without the egg. If you're interested, I'm sure Jim would give me a copy of the recipe.

Homemade Ice Cream in a Coffee Can

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1-pound coffee can with lid
  • 1 3-pound coffee can with lid
  • 1 pint of half and half (milk can be used instead)
  • 1 egg, beaten (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla, 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup, or 1/4 cup of strawberries

PREPARATION:

Add all of the above ingredients to the 1 pound coffee can; mix well. Put the lid on the coffee can and secure with duct tape. Place the 1 pound coffee can into the 3 pound coffee can. Surround with crushed ice and rock salt and place the lid onto the 3 pound coffee can.

Have your kids sit on the ground and roll back and forth 3 to 4 feet apart. Roll for 8 to 10 minutes. (The kids can kick the can back and forth as well.)

Check to see if the ice cream is hard; if it isn't, replace the lid, add more ice and rock salt. Roll for another 8 mins.

Remove the lid to the 1 pound can and serve in bowls.
Serves 4-6 people.

and this really tasted like ice cream?

I'm going to have to try it since it sounds cheaper than buying. Do you think we can add pecans? I would like to try this out on Phil first

Well, it wasn't Ben & Jerry's, but yeah, it tasted like ice cream. I can't promise with the recipe I posted, though, as it's different than Jim's. But it would be a fun thing to try if you're bored.

Warning: You're probably gonna get bored of rolling the can back and forth unless you make a game out of it. Maybe push it to diesel and get him to push it back to you :)

Yeah I would like to see Diesel push it back without trying to put his teeth in it first
